What You Get in a Hospira 30 mL Vial
One sealed 30 mL multiple-dose vial of Hospira Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP (NDC 0409-3977-01). It is sterile, nonpyrogenic water containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a preservative, labeled for diluting or dissolving drugs. Because of the preservative, the same vial can be entered more than once with aseptic technique.
About Hospira Bacteriostatic Water 30mL
Hospira bacteriostatic water 30 mL is sterile water for injection with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative, in a 30 mL multiple-dose vial made by Hospira, Inc., a Pfizer company. The label describes it as “indicated only for diluting or dissolving drugs” for intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous injection, “according to instructions of the manufacturer of the drug to be administered.”
Why the preservative matters
Benzyl alcohol stops bacteria from multiplying inside the vial. That is what makes a multiple-dose vial possible: you can draw from the same 30 mL more than once with aseptic technique. Sterile water for injection has no preservative and comes in single-dose containers. Bacteriostatic water vs sterile water, compared.
Why buyers ask for Hospira by name
It is an FDA-approved drug product (NDA 018802) from a named manufacturer. Every vial carries an NDC, a lot number and an expiry date you can check. Many “bac water” listings online are labeled for research or laboratory use, have no NDC, and don’t name who made them.
Which Hospira product this is
Hospira makes more than one bacteriostatic water. This listing is the 0.9% benzyl alcohol, 30 mL plastic fliptop vial (NDC 0409-3977-01). Hospira’s 1.1% version is a separate product: a 20 mL fill in a 30 mL glass vial (NDC 0409-1093-04). We don’t sell that one, and we don’t sell a 10 mL size.

Choose your packWhich Pack Size Should You Buy?
Two dates decide this: the expiry printed on each vial, and how long you keep a vial once it's open. Standard multiple-dose vial practice is to discard an opened vial 28 days after first use. That is CDC and USP guidance, not a statement on the Hospira label. So the number of vials you need depends on how often you start a new one.

How to Check Your Vial When It Arrives
It takes about a minute. A genuine Hospira 30 mL vial shows:
- 1"Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP" on the label
- 2Hospira, Inc., Lake Forest, IL as the maker
- 3NDC 0409-3977-01
- 40.9% benzyl alcohol and "multiple-dose" on the label
- 5A printed lot number, and an expiry date that matches this page
- 6An intact fliptop seal and clear liquid with no particles
If anything doesn't match, don't use the vial. Contact us with a photo of the label and we'll sort it out.
Hospira recalled one lot of this product in September 2019 (lot W20308, expiry December 2019, over sterility assurance). That lot expired years ago. You can check any lot against FDA recall notices.
How to Store Hospira Bacteriostatic Water
Room temperature, 20–25 °C (68–77 °F), as the label directs. It doesn't need refrigerating before opening.
Write the date on the vial and use aseptic technique for every entry. The usual limit is 28 days after first use.
Follow the storage instructions of the product you mixed it with.
The liquid is cloudy or has particles, the seal is damaged, or the vial is past its expiry date.

Reviews from verified buyers will appear here.
Verified buyers only · photos of the sealed vial and label welcomeHospira Bacteriostatic Water 30mL FAQ
How much does a 30 mL vial of Hospira bacteriostatic water cost?
A single Hospira 30 mL vial is $22.99 here. Packs lower the price per vial: $21.99 in a 5-pack, $20.00 in a 10-pack and $16.00 in a 25-pack. All packs contain the same Hospira vial, NDC 0409-3977-01.
What is the price of a 25-pack of Hospira bacteriostatic water?
Our 25-pack of Hospira 30 mL vials is $399.99, or $16.00 per vial. That's $174.76 less than buying 25 single vials. A manufacturer tray of 25 carries NDC 0409-3977-03.
What's the difference between bac water and Hospira bac water?
"Bac water" is short for bacteriostatic water, made by many companies. Hospira bac water is one specific, FDA-approved product: Hospira's Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP, NDC 0409-3977-01. Many generic versions are labeled for research use and have no NDC.
Is Hospira bacteriostatic water good?
It's the version most buyers ask for by name. It comes from a named manufacturer (Hospira, part of Pfizer), meets the USP standard, is FDA-approved, and every vial carries an NDC, lot number and expiry date you can check.
Is bacteriostatic water the same as 0.9% benzyl alcohol?
No. Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is only the preservative that stops bacteria from multiplying; the rest of the vial is water for injection.
Is "reconstitution solution" the same as bacteriostatic water?
Not necessarily. "Reconstitution solution" is a marketing name, and many products sold under it are labeled for research use. Hospira's label reads "Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP," with an NDC. Read the label, not the listing title.
Can I buy bacteriostatic water over the counter, or at CVS, Walgreens or Walmart?
Hospira's label marks it "Rx only," and retail pharmacies rarely keep it on the shelf. Some can order it in, so call ahead. Most buyers order it online.
How long does a 30 mL vial last once opened?
The Hospira label doesn't set a number. Standard multiple-dose vial practice is to discard it 28 days after first use. Unopened, it's good until the expiry date printed on the vial.
Do you sell Hospira bacteriostatic water in 10 mL?
No. We stock the Hospira 30 mL multiple-dose vial only, in packs of 1, 5, 10 and 25.
Is the vial glass or plastic?
Plastic. Hospira's 0.9% bacteriostatic water comes in a 30 mL plastic fliptop vial. Hospira's 1.1% version comes in a glass vial and is a different product with its own NDC.
